| dc.description.abstract | Clothing not only provides protection and modesty but also is a representation of one’s confidence, position, status, culture and personality. It is a considerable component of human civilization that symbolically represents gender, country, class, caste, wealth, ethnic group and religion and may be a nonlinguistic way of communication. Upon observation it may be stated that people who are dressed formally use more formal language to describe themselves compared to those who wear more casual clothes. Also, formally dressed employees are believed to be more productive, competent and rational at their workplace. Research also states that formal clothing be it a saree, salwar kurta, pantsuit or skirt blazer; all these attires enhance the Abstract Cognitive Processing of an individual. Different countries and organizations worldwide have changed their clothing policy focusing on enhancement of productivity and efficiency. The job performance of an employee also depends immensely on the uniforms or dress-codes. Instances show that employees who were issued specific clothing or a uniform had both positive and negative effects on the productivity and performance at the workplace. Those employees who are all dressed alike are easily identified, they show unity & teamwork, removes the socio-economic aspect of clothing, enhances professionalism and eliminates discrimination. Although few may also feel that their individuality is hindered and there is no choice to look apart in the crowd. | |
